Saqqara

- - - - -

Saqqara was the principal necropolis of the ancient city of Memphis which was in use from the 1st-Dynasty (3100 - 2890 BCE) to the Christian period (CE 395 - 540). Saqqara is best known for the Step Pyramid, but it is also famous for its private Old Kingdom tombs which contain beautiful and revealing scenes. The best-known tombs are those of Ti, Kagemni, the 'Two Brothers', and Ptahhotep; the most famous is that of Mereruka.   Beneath the ground, Saqqara is honeycombed with intercut tombs, galleries, and robber shafts, not always visible on the desert surface.
